KHARTOUM (Sudanow) - Some 626 contestants from 28 countries have presented their works for the 8th session of the Tayeb Salih International Award For Creative Writing.
The Contest is held annually in honor of the late Sudanese-international Novelist al-Tayeb Salih and has been attracting contributions from literary writes from around the World.
Award General Secretary Majthoub Aidarous tells Sudanow that participants would contend this time for the awards on novel, short story beside critical studies on the literature of place. The literature of place had drawn a lot of contestants in the previous sessions, hiking up to 38 high-quality participations. That had prompted organizers to devote an independent award for this type of writing in the 8th session.
Aidarous said the Award technical committee is in continuous session at the premises of Zain Telecom that sponsors the Award. The committee is following up the progress of work in anticipation of the closing events, slated for February 14-15 in Khartoum when the winners will be announced.
A scientific symposium is usually held during the Award’s final festival. The symposium will discuss the narrative of travel literature and will be graced by outstanding writers from within Sudan and abroad. The event is seen as a good opportunity for the public to see renowned writers from the Arab region and the World at large.
The Award Council had taken note of the completion of preparations for initial arbitration and the commencement of the stage for final arbitration, which will be finalized in December.
Each genre committee is made up of recognized qualified and fair arbitrators, according to Aidarous.
He said the Award is seeing an increase in the number of female participants from around the World.
The Tayeb Salih International Award For Creative Writing was launched by the Telecom Zain in 2010 on the first anniversary of Tayeb Salih and was received with wide applause, thanks to the high position of Salih whose works were translated into all the World’s important languages.
