Selected Poem: Death In The City
10 March, 2019
KHARTOUM (Sudanow) - Muhideen Faris (1936-2008) is one of the Sudanese greatest poets. His poems were closely associated with his political ideals, injustices and racial segregation. He was both socially and politically involved, particularly in his late poems. His personal and all human beings tragedy was one of his dominant themes.
Faris's following poem was translated from Arabic by al-Sir Khidir:
Death in the City
O frightful mythical night
How dare you engulf
Your vicious greedy jaws on the city
While death, the plague and the wanderers
Are floundering, with no harbor on the horizon,
And the chattering people without feeling hunger,
Climbing the walls of events
Shivering from the phantom of fires
And snatching at the beginnings of similar days
Like street poll
Without appetite.
O my wounded homeland!
The wind lost its instinct
And chose not to mourn.
He who dies amongst us is mortal
And will not be given our company to his rest
For all the earth is a tomb!
