Darago Wins Sudan’s First Turtle Race
01 December, 2019
KHARTOUM (Sudanow) - A female tortoise with the name ‘Darago’ Thursday won Sudan’s ever turtle race, beating 22 other contenders.
The race, that won wide follow up from the local and foreign media, was organized at the outer yard of the country’s national museum. It has also drawn wide interaction on the social media. Tens of turtle breeders and environmentalists attended the event.
Darago’s owner, Ms. Rida Hassan won the championship trophy in addition to a symbolic financial prize.
Veterinary Doctor Noon Mahjoub, who initiated the race, said the event was meant to raise public awareness about how to handle pets in general and turtles in particular.
Vet. Noon said the aim was also to conduct medical checkups on these pets and give advice to their owners if needed.
Turtle trade has recently become popular in Khartoum. Noon told al-Jazeera net that she sold last year more than 1300 turtles at SDG500 (about 6 dollars) per one.
Turtle racing is an event in which participants typically place turtles in the center of a circle and watch them walk around until one of them crosses out of the circle. Initially popularized as an event geared toward children at county fairs and picnics in the Central United States, it has since grown in scope and popularity.
