Andrab Tree: Important Medical And Economic Benefits

KHARTOUM (Sudanow) - The  Andrab (English name: grey-leaved saucer berry and grey-leaved cordia (scientific name: cordia sinensis) is a tree of arid and semi-arid regions, often in riparian zones. 

According to agricultural engineer Ms. Amani Hassan the Andrab (local name) is not widely known in the world. It is spread in many parts of Sudan, the drier parts of Africa, Arabia and Tropical Asia.

It is a shrub or small tree 3-12 meter high. The bark is brown to pale creamy-brown.

The Flowers are white or cream and the fruits are orange-red when mature. 

All parts of the tree provide the community with great medical and economic benefits.

Ms. Hassan explained that a decoction of boiled roots is used to treat malaria but it is not recommended for pregnant women because it can cause an abortion.

The roots and bark are used for stomach disorders in human and are mixed to treat conjunctivitis in cattle.

The Roots are used also as an antibiotic to heal wounds.

The sweet and sticky tasty pulp of the fruit is eaten fresh, used to make juice and often is cooked down into a thick syrup and put in porridge as a sugar substitute and can be preserved for a long time.

The gum is also edible.

The leaves are very important source of fodder for Animals.

The timber is strong and resistant to climatic changes therefore it is used in construction, furniture, agricultural implements, sticks and kitchen tools.
