Women Parliamentarians Day
01 August, 2017
Dr. Suad al-Fatih al-Badawe, a prominent Islamist and parliamentarian, seen here with the First President of Pan-African Parliament (PAP) Gertrude Ibengwe Mongella (from Tanzania) during the opening session marking Sudanese Women Parliamentarians Day.
The session took place on July 31, 2017, at Salam Rotana Hotel, Khartoum, Sudan.
PAP, also known as the African Parliament, is the legislative body of the African Union. It held its inaugural session in March 2004.
Sudanese women secured the voting right back in 1958, two years after the country's independence. Fatima Ahmed Ibrahim was the first woman in Africa and the Middle East to be elected to the parliament in 1965, which followed the October 1964 uprising that toppled the then first military government in Sudan (1958-1964).
