Appointment of New UNAMID Force Commander

KHARTOUM (Sudanow) - Lieutenant General Leonard Muriuki Ngondi of Kenya has been appointed as head of the military component of the United Nations -African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMD) in west Sudan.
UNAMID said in a press release that the appointment was made on Tuesday by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat.
Ngondi succeeds Rwandan Lt. Gen. Frank Mushyo Kamanzi who, according to UNAMID, the UN Secretary-General has praised for his dedication and effective leadership as head of UNAMID military component.
Lt. Gen. Ngondi has served as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (2012), and Commanding Officer, Kenyan battalion (KENBATT) in the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (2000). He was also deployed as part of the Kenyan contingent of the United Nations Transition Assistance Group in Namibia (1990).
