Permanent Ceasefire Declared Throughout South Sudan
27 June, 2018
KHARTOUM (Sudanow) - A permanent ceasefire was declared throughout the Republic of South Sudan according to Khartoum Declaration of Agreement between parties of the conflict of South Sudan.
The agreement has been signed on Wednesday by H. E. President Salva Kiir Miyardit, SPLM/IO Chairman Dr. Riack Machar Teny, Representatives of South Sudan Opposition Alliance, Former Detainees and other political parties.
The ceasefire shall enter into force within 72 hours of signing of the Declaration.
According to the agreement the parties shall agree on all the ceasefire arrangements including disengagement, separation of forces in close proximity, withdrawal of allied troops, opening of humanitarian corridors and release of prisoners of war and political detainees.
The agreement invited the inter-governmental authority on development (IGAD) and African Union member states to deploy the necessary forces to supervise the agreed permanent ceasefire.
Khartoum talks between the government of South Sudan and the different South Sudanese opposition groups kicked off on Monday.
President Bashir was mandated by IGAD to facilitate this second round of face–to-face discussion between President Salva Kiir Mayardit and opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny.
The first round of face–to-face talks between them was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, last week.
