Shining African Athletes Promised Big Prizes In Tokyo Olympics

KHARTOUM (Sudanow) - The Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) has earmarked a sum of one million U.S Dollars for shining African athletes in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, announced ANOCA General Secretary, Eng. Ahmed Abulgasim .
Abulgasim, who is also former secretary of the Sudanese Olympic Committee, said the sum would be granted to the athletes winning medals in the Tokyo Olympics.
“Athletes who enter the list of top ten players at the international level and Africa’s list of the first three players will benefit from the sum,” he said. But he said prizes should not exceed the participation limit put for each African nation.
He said the ANOCA will discuss the final criteria for these prizes in its upcoming meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, later on this month.
The Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), that unites the 54 national Olympic Committees (NOCs) of Africa, is currently headquartered in Abuja, Nigeria. It serves as the successor to Standing Committee of African Sports, founded in 1965 in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo. It often assembles with other continental NOCs in the form of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC).
Abulgasim said work within the ANOCA was progressing very well after it overcame some hurdles.
He said the ANOCA General Assembly is scheduled to elect a new president on 29 December, in place of interim president Mustafa Braf, an Algerian national.
Mustafa Braf (Algeria), Member of the International Olympic Committee, Ms. Ledia Nbeerska (Burundi), Cameroonian Hammad Kalkaba and Nevrosi Keghsoni (Botswana) will run for the office.
Abulgasim described the recent meeting in Malawi of the secretaries of national African Olympic committees as “successful, beneficial and fruitful.”
The Malawi meeting was preceded by a meeting to prepare for the Tokyo Olympics.
“The ANOCA is faring very well and will move in high gear by the end of this year,” maintained Abulgasim.
He said the national committees’ meeting has endorsed the continuation of Sheikh Ahmed Alfahd Alsabbah (Kuwait) as chairman of the union of national committees.
Abulgasim further announced that the ANOCA would embark on the naming of persons for a number of its leading posts “a matter that could enhance its general performance a good deal.”
HURDLES:
Progress of African sports is quite visible. The proof for this is the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina in September 2018 that saw African Athletes collecting 56 medals, up from 32 medals obtained in the 2016 Nanjing, China, summer Olympics, said Abulgasim. This is a noteworthy progress. Some African countries, like Mauritius, Eritrea, Burundi and the Niger have now started to collect Olympic medals. This is a proof that these countries are serious and have plans and programs to uplift African sports and score good results in the future,” said Abulgasim.
THE ANOCA ROLE:
Abulgasim said the ANOCA does not interfere directly in the work of African national Olympic committees but, rather, supports serious committees financially and technically.
“The relation between the ANOCA and national Olympic committees is very good indeed. There is enthusiastic daily contact between them in order to effect necessary change. We concentrate on the issues of marketing and promotion,” he said.
He said the African Olympic games will be launched in Morocco in 2019, to be followed in Ghana in 2023.
He said the Egyptian Sports Minister has pledged to host the 2027 African Olympics.
The ANOCA has also decided to organize Olympic beach games that could help improve water sports. In 2022 the ANOCA will organize the youth Olympics in Senegal. All these are positive indications for the map of African Olympic contests from which the national Olympic committees would benefit a good deal, said Abulgasim.
