An Ode of Hope for Darfur

An Ode of Hope for Darfur

By: Mohamed Babikir Ahmed

"In every street of El Fasher, the echo of a cry yet unheard lingers, and a smile that refuses to be stolen persists despite all the ruin."

El Fasher, a city that groans yet does not break.

Beneath every pile of rubble, life insists on surviving.

In every scorched corner, a woman wipes her tears and whispers:

"There is still a spirit in us."

How many times have they tried to extinguish its light?

How many times did they wish to turn it into a memory?

Yet each time it rises from the ashes,

like a mother who lost her children but decided to give birth to yet another

El Fasher knows the meaning of hunger,

but it also knows the meaning of dignity yonder

.

It knows how close death can be,

yet it still insists on life, even with half a heart.

In the morning, when the sun rises over the demolished homes,

Children rise to gather what remains of clay and stones,

building a small wall, not for shelter, but to say:

"We are here all in all."
