Port Sudan (Sudanow) - In a qualitative development reflecting the social and political transformations within the Australian society, the city of Maryburnong has re-elected Mohamed Samra as its mayor for the 2025-2026 term, making him the first person of Sudanese origin to hold this position twice in the country's history.

Observers considered this a significant achievement for African communities, and Sudanese in particular, in Australia

“Australia Today” platform believes that Mohamed Samra's election represents a proud achievement for African communities, especially Sudanese ones, as it stands out as personification of the core values upon which Australia is founded. These are the values of justice, equality, and respect for diversity.

The platform has further noted that Samra was first elected in 2024, on a ticket of a clear commitment to serving his community, and emphasizing that his re-election for this new term reflects the growing confidence in his ability to serve his local community.

Following his re-election, Samra said that this stage represents a very exciting time for the city of Maryburnong as it continues to grow and develop. He added that assuming the position is a great honor, emphasizing that he serves a supportive, inclusive, and community-oriented city—a city that consistently demonstrates its resilience, innovation, and commitment to its citizens. He explained that these values form the foundation upon which he is building his vision for the city's future during his new term.

Australia hosts thousands of Sudanese refugees, most of them those who fled during the rule of ousted President Omar al-Bashir, while some were born and raised there. The war raging in Sudan for nearly three years now has driven thousands of Sudanese to seek refuge in neighboring countries, in addition to migrating to European countries, Canada, and Australia, among others, making the Sudanese community a prominent component within the Australian society.

Social researchers believe that the dispersal of Sudanese across the globe due to wars, political pressures, and the search for better living conditions have allowed some to acquire new experiences that may contribute to personal and family development.

The researchers also indicate that these experiences gained abroad could help revitalize capabilities within Sudan, enhancing opportunities to benefit from global experiences in building a more stable and resilient future.
