Obituary: Dr. Taha Talaat

  

KHARTOUM (Sudanow) - Sudanow magazine mourns to the Sudanese community and deaf in particular the untimely death of Dr. Taha Talaat, the founding President of Sudanese National Society for the Deaf who had served his patients and the deaf for 48 years.

Dr. Talaat died on Saturday in a hospital in Florida, USA. 

Late Dr. Talaat was graduated as a medical doctor in Ein Shams University, Egypt, 1958. He obtained Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, Ear Nose and Throat (ENT), Edinburgh, Scotland UK 1967 and Fellowship of American College of Surgeons in 1980. 

He served the profession as President of Sudan Doctors Union and  Private Doctors Association. He also worked as Associate Teacher Ear Nose and Throat for under graduates, University of Khartoum, teacher and examiner for Post Graduate MS degree in both the University of Khartoum and the Sudanese Council for Medical specialties. He was the first President of Sudanese Oto-Larynglogical Society 1993.

Late Dr. Talaat had pioneered education and care for the deaf in Sudan by establishing the Sudanese National Society for the Deaf and served as its president in a volunteer unpaid position. He established the First School for the Deaf in Sudan "Amal (Hope) Institute for Educating and Rehabilitating the Deaf" in 1971, and subsequent 14 Institutes. He also established the first Sport and Cultural Club for the Deaf, 1972, "Taha Talaat Total Communication Center" and "Adila Center for Early Intervention" and Deaf League for Women 1995.

He was awarded "Arab Health Award" for excellence and dedicated work for the Deaf- Middle East International Oto-Laryngological Conference, April 2015.

He was the founder of Palestinian Red Crescent Society, Sudan branch 1969 and the Sudanese Ambulance Society 1985.

Dr. Talaat had authored some books including the Sudanese Sign Language Dictionary addition to many papers in national and international journals and co-authored Unified Arabic Sign Language Dictionary-Dubai 1999.

He had a liver transplant in 1989.
