01 March, 2020
LONDON (Sudanow) – The Sudanese CNN Senior international correspondent Nima Elbagir has won the 2020 Royal Television Society’s ‘TV Journalist of the Year’ Award.
The judges recognized Elbagir for her “unmatched range of investigation, eye-witness reporting and courage.”
The prestigious awards were presented at a ceremony on 26 February 2020 at the London Hilton on Park Lane.
The Royal Television Society (RTS) is a British-based educational charity for the discussion, and analysis of television in all its forms, past, present and future. It is the oldest television society in the world.
The awards, which span both news and current affairs, seek to recognize creative and excellent journalism by organisations whose broadcasts are transmitted on a UK-based platform, or who create online video content from a UK production base.
This was the London-based Elbagir’s third RTS Award following her 2018 Scoop of the Year Award and 2016 Specialist Journalist of the Year Award.
She has been honoured with a duPoint Award, a Polk Award in 2017, the International Center for Journalists 2018 Excellence in International Reporting Award and the 2018 IWMF Courage in Journalism Award in October. In June 2019, LA Press Club honoured Elbagir with the 2019 Daniel Pearl Award for Courage and Integrity in Journalism.
Elbagir began her journalism career with Reuters in December 2002 reporting for them from Sudan, covering the simmering conflict in the country's Darfur region. She moved into broadcast journalism in 2005 joining the launch of More4 News. She joined CNN as a London-based international correspondent in 2008.
