A Martyr's Father

KHARTOUM (Sudanow) - A poster depicting the picture of his son Osman, mounted on his back, and dressed in his national costume, Mohammad Gasmalseed marched the over 140 kms separating his homeland, Arbaji in Gazira State south central Sudan, to the national capital Khartoum, just for the sole purpose of attending the signing of the transitional government’s documents. A journey his martyred son would have done, had he been alive on the 17th of August 2019.
It was a moving scene for thousands of youth and revolutionary attending the event at the Friendship Hall in Khartoum to see the man, standing tall, erect and proud, carrying the picture of his son. Simple message, if my son was not here physically, am here to stand for him. He is in the hereafter, his soul backs the revolution. The caption under the picture reads realization of the people collective dream of a homeland where all and everybody enjoys social justice and mutual love.
Only a few people could hold back their tears before such a telling scene.
He told Sudanow that his son Osman had taken part in the sit-in before the Army General Command intending to press for change. Osman was shot and killed during the brutal dispersal of the sit-in on June 3rd.
He described his son as “a handsome, well-built, amicable and sensitive lad” when it comes to helping people in need and the underdogs.
He disclosed that his son left his college studies to allow for his father providing subsistence for other members of the family and particularly to allow for the education of his two sisters. He obtained a short diploma study to graduate earlier and help his father.
He said he attended the celebration to let his son witness through his eyes the dream come true a dream for which he paid his own life.
Gasmalseed said all he hoped from the coming government was to “hold to the values of justice and equality” among all peoples of the Sudan.
