Bushra al-Fadil Shortlisted for the British Caine Award

KHARTOUM (Sudanow) – Sudanese prominent writer Bushra al-Fadil has been shortlisted for the British £10,000 Caine Prize for African Writing.
The Caine Prize for African Writing is an annual literature prize awarded to an African writer of a short story published in English. The prize was launched in 2000 to encourage and highlight the richness and diversity of African writing by bringing it to a wider audience internationally.
Al-Fadil's short story 'The Story of the Girl Whose Birds Flew Away' has been selected for the short list along with other four stories, three from Nigeria and one from South Africa.
The story was translated by Max Shmookler with support from Ms. Najlaa Osman al-Toam, published in The Book of Khartoum - A City in Short Fiction edited by Raph Cormack & Max Shmookler (Comma Press, UK. 2016).
Bushra holds a PhD in Russian language and literature. He taught the two subjects at Khartoum University until the early 1990s when he left the country for Saudi Arabia where he is currently living.
Bushra has published four collections of short stories in Arabic. His most recent collection Above a City's Sky was published in 2012, the same year Bushra won the Al-Tayeb Salih Short Story Award.
The winner is set to be announced in London on July 3
It is to be noted that the Sudanese writer Ms. Leila Aboulela has won the first Caine Prize in 2000 for her short story "The Museum" included in her collection of short stories Coloured Lights.
