Quartet Summit in Khartoum Issues its Final Communiqué

KHARTOUM, Dec. 22 (sudanow) – The four leaders from Sudan, Egypt and Libya concluded a one day summit in Khartoum and issue a final communiqué calling for peaceful, transparent and credible referendum for southern Sudan.
The quartet summit between the President of the Republic, Field Marshal Omer Al-Bashir, the President of Egypt, Mohamed Hosni Mubarak, the Libyan Leader Muammar Al-Qaddafi, in the presence of the First Vice President and President of the Government of South Sudan (GoSS), Salva Kiir, which convened in Khartoum on Tuesday, indicated that the summit was held in recognition by the participating leaders of the importance of the developments Sudan currently witnesses including preparations for the referendum and implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), that stipulate mobilization of the regional and international efforts for boosting the peace and stability all over Sudan
The final communiqué stated that the quartet summit discussed implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and holding the referendum of south Sudan in an atmosphere of peace, calmness, transparency and credibility and in a manner which enable the southerners to express their will and choice for unity or peaceful separation
The communiqué affirmed respect of the four leaders to result of the referendum whatever it is, expressing the summit's hope that the result of the summit will have positive impact on the future of Sudan. The final communiqué underscored the importance of exerting efforts to boost the mutual confidence between the two partners of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and enabling them to reach agreement on the controversial issues toward holding the referendum in a healthy atmosphere.
It expressed its appreciation that the two parties to the CPA have voiced commitment to the implementation of the peace agreement and continue joint work to complete the arrangements for holding the referendum and adopting the pos-referendum arrangements in an atmosphere of mutual confidence
Meanwhile, the quartet summit discussed the relation between north and south Sudan after the referendum and the necessity of establishing firm relations that are based on the mutual interest, peace, stability and economic development. It affirmed the summit's pledge to boosting the cooperation between the north and the south currently and in the future.
The final communiqué stated that the quartet summit has deliberated about the efforts for realizing peace in Darfur region and appreciated the new strategy of the government for realizing peace and development in Darfur, and called on all the Darfurian factions to join as soon as possible the ongoing negotiations in Doha and to work seriously for reaching a peace agreement, calling on the international community to continue their efforts for reaching peace, rehabilitation and development in Darfur
The final communiqué also reflected the summit's support to all the Arab and international efforts for achieving peace in Darfur and appreciated the role played by Libya, Egypt, Qatar and the international community for reaching a comprehensive peace agreement that will put an end to the suffering of Darfur people and pave the way the rehabilitation and development in Darfur region.
