Are we a great nation?
29 August, 2010By: Ahmed Alhaj (Site Admin)
Sudan is rich in invaluable and tremendous resources of vast lands and diverse climates. It is characterized by fertile farming lands, abounding water and diverse and tremendous animal resources. The discovery of petroleum, moreover, has bestowed on it an important economic dimension. Its distinguished geographic position, meanwhile, has made of it a crossroads for many African countries, a situation that qualifies it as an investment and commercial gateway to those countries.
The Sudan's importance has developed in the recent period due to its rising economic importance, on the one hand, and to its diverse resources, on the other. It has become a destination to businessmen from around the world for investment in various aspects; and the Sudan has thus occupied an advanced position among the countries most attractive to investment. But all this might be at risk in a few months. A new reality is expected to emerge, either a stronger Sudan united, willingly, or the nation that we have come to know will fall apart.
The Comprehensive Peace Agreement which has put an end to the longest war Africa has ever witnessed has stipulated that the parties concerned should work to make unity attractive. But accumulation of historic factor and political maneuvering might splash uneasiness and doubt in many arenas. It takes courageous men and women to overcome them. This is a task that each and every one of us has to discharge.
It is true that theory is different from practice. But for this magazine, the conviction is that when people find themselves reflected and well represented in all walks of life in their homeland, they will never seek to secede. After all, no body in their right mind will seek a weak and dismembered homeland. And our job will be to reflect the Sudan as it is: its beauty, diversity, challenges, people and aspirations. It might be a difficult task ands a huge challenge. Still we, but let us try first and then worry about the difficulties. We will cross the bridge when we reach it. And may be at the other side we will have some positive surprises. Great nations rise at times of crisis and prove they are up to par with challenges they face. Sudan is a great country; history is watching to see if we are equally a great nation. Greatness is earned, it is not offered. Amen
