Sudan Red Crescent society participates in the 31st International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent in Geneva

Khartoum, Sudan (sudanow.info.sd)- Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS) is taking part in the 31st International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent that starts in Geneva on Monday the 28th of November 2011. The Red Crescent delegation to the conference is headed by SRCS Secretary General Mr. Osman Gaffer and SRCS head of International Relations Department Mr. Abu Baker Al Tigani.
Mr. Osman Gaffer said that the 31st International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent will discuss various issues of concern for RC and RC Movement such as improving security for medical teams during armed conflicts. “In several occasions the medical teams were not able to provide health care to the victims of armed conflicts due to the attacks of the conflicts parts on the medial teams, ambulances and health facilities” said Osman Gaffer.
SRCS Secretary General further stated that SRCS has more than 400.000 volunteers all over Sudan; many of them support the official health services, especially during emergencies, by providing first aid, medical evacuation and helping elders, women and children.
“SRCS volunteers have played a leading role in providing health services to the people affected by the recent conflicts in South Kordufan and Blue Nile states” added Osman Gaffer.
TheSudaneseRed Crescent Society (SRCS) was established by the Cabinet of Ministers decision No. 869 of its meeting on 3 April 1956 as voluntary association aimed at alleviating the suffering and strengthening the capacities of vulnerable groups in the community. In the same meeting, the Government agreed to sign the Geneva Conventions of August 9, 1949 and SRCS became a member of the International Movement on October 19, 1957 in India. The SRCS is also a founding member of the Jedah-based Arab Secretariat of the Red Cross and Red Crescent .
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is made up of the ICRC, the IFRC and 187 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The International Conference, its highest deliberative body, meets every four years.
