Sudanese government says ICC Prosecutor's arrest warrant is targeting the Darfur Peace Agreement

By: Ahmed Alhaj (Site Admin)

Khartoum, (sudanow.info.sd) The government  on Friday said the warrant arrest by the ICC Prosecutor against Sudan' Defence Minister Gen Abdul Rahim Mohamed Hussein is politically motivated and seeks to undermine the   Doha Peace Agreement between the government and Darfur rebel Movement.

"government was not surprised by the issuance of the warrant of arrest as presented by the ICC prosecutor, Friday, against the Minister of Defense. This was already leaked to the press by the office of the prosecutor, within their feverish activities to back the Darfur rebel movements." The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a statement carried by the official Sudan News Agency Friday.

" It is clear that the prosecutor has carefully chosen his timing to coincide with the victories scored by the Sudanese Armed Forces against the rebels on all operation scenes, particularly the Blue Nile and South Kordufan. And we have no doubt that the timing was meant to spoil the victories scored and to raise the failing morale of the rebels," the Ministry said in its statement.

The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, requested Pre-Trial Chamber I to issue an arrest warrant against the current Sudanese Defense Minister for crimes against humanity and war crimes allegedly committed in Darfur from August 2003 to March 2004.

''This warrant 's content and timing  serve, in primo, the agenda of the rebel groups that rejected the Doha peace document and those who are seeking to place hurdle in front of  implementation of the agreement'' the ministry argued.

The statement said the government believes that Ocampo ''did not want to leave his office without making much noice, to be added to his previous ones''.

The statement said the government of Sudan would  like to stress that the Sudanese judiciary  was well established and independent and capable of handling any complaint to be submitted by any party  against any person and that the doors of the Sudanese judiciary would remain open before any one who has a complaint and who seek justice.

The statement said the government would like to remind the prosecutor about the statements he made in Libya recently about the trial of  elements of  Kaddafi regime and his backing off from a demand that one such leader be sent to trial outside Libya, saying this was not necessary so long as the Libyan authorities wish and are capable of trying him inside the country.

"what makes him (Ocampo) then seek justice for Sudanese outside their country.??" The ministry concluded.
