25 December, 2011By: Ahmed Alhaj (Site Admin)
Khartoum, ( sudanow.info.sd) -The Sudanese Army spokesman, Colonel Sawarmi Khalid Saad said rebel Justice and Equality Movement JEM, leader Dr Khalil Ibrahim, was actually ''injured in a clash Thursday evening and died later on Saturday of his wounds at five evening Saturday''.
In a joint press briefing with the Minister of Information, Abdullah Ali Massar, colonel Sawarmi said a battle took place on Thursday in which many of rebel JEM elements were wounded amongst them rebel Dr Khalil Ismail ''but he did not die and was evacuated for treatment in the Al Mazraa area'' of north Kordufan where he died of his wounds.
He said those around him realizing that announcing his death would have serious consequences, have hurriedly buried him in the area. The spokesman did not however say how they have identified that the dead man was khalil. Journalists were not given any chance to ask questions.
The official said time to reveal further information has not yet come.
The Minister of Information Massar said fighting was ''still going on'' adding that 30 rebels were killed along with the JEM leader and that the army was able to destroy about 17 landcruiser pickups and vehicles.
He also accused the rebel movement of ''forcefully leading away over 700 young men'' from the villages and rural areas it passed through in north Kordufan and North Darfur since it moved out of Wadi Hawar, in the Libya Sudanese desert on December the 19th.
The Sudanese Minister of Information Abdalla Ali Massar has meanwhile explained that JEM wanted to come out of Wadi Hawar area because of approach of the dry season and because after loosing its strong ally in Libya, colonel Kaddafi, JEM wanted to replenish its ranks and files by forcefully recruiting young men and taking them to the south for training. He said the second reason was that, like all other rebel movement, it was seeking inhabited areas where it could get food and other supplies it badly needed. He said the advance weaponry and the 140 pickups used by the rebel movement in this assault came from Libya.
The Minister said the movement leader; Dr Khalil wanted to enter into south Sudan from which he would go to the south to attend a planned conference between the various rebel movements in Uganda on December the 28th.
'' we are appealing to all rebel movements including those of khalil who are carrying arms now, to listen to the voice of wisdom and join the peace process. Our doors are open and the Doha agreement is open'' Massar stressed.
The Minister of Interior has meanwhile said khalil's death sends strong message to rebels so that they would sit down for peaceful talks.
Minister of interior Ibrahim Mahmouod Hamid, has described the death of Khalil ibrahim the leader of the rebel Justice and Equality Movements as ''a message to all movements to sit for peace talks to reach solutions for the issues of difference and realize the national interests''.
