Delegation of the European Union Bids Farewell to Ambassador Carlo De Filippi

Khartoum, ( sudanow.info.sd) - In his last reception with the diplomatic corps, the European Union Head of Delegation Ambassador Carlo De Filippi accompanied by his spouse Mrs. Maria Christina announced the ending of his term as EU Ambassador to Sudan.
Ambassador Carlo De Filippi, in his farewell speech expressed his satisfaction that his mission was successfully completed and that he has good hope for the positive development of the Euro- Sudanese relations. He added that the growing bilateral cooperation between EU and Sudan and the establishment of a sincere political dialogue between the Sudanese government and the EU countries on various issues will reflect positively on the Sudanese relations with Europe.
In his speech the European Union Ambassador thanked the Sudanese government, international and local partners and Sudanese staff working at the European Union for their cooperation to strengthen the Euro-Sudanese relations. The EU Ambassador expressed his hope that the European Union work shall expand in Sudan and reflect on the aspirations of the European and Sudanese people hoping for peace and prosperity for all the Sudanese people especially the youth and young people.
Ambassador Carlo De Filippi took over as head of the Delegation of the European Commission mission in Khartoum in 2008 after a diplomatic career in Burkina Faso, Guinea, Congo and Gabon. He was selected by the European Union High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy for his expertise in African affairs, conflict resolution, development and humanitarian work. Under his assignment, Ambassador Carlo De Filippi advanced the role of the EU in the field of development and cooperation, represented the European Union was a key guarantor to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and has pledged over one billion and half Euros to support the peace process in Sudan through the establishment of 81 development projects in North and South Sudan.
Furthermore, the Euro Sudanese relations witnessed the start of the political dialogue on issues of democracy, human rights and support to the process of elections and referendum both financially and technically. In addition, the past period witnessed high level European officials visiting Sudan notably the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs Christina Georgieva and the Development Commissioner Andreas Piebalgs in addition to Sudanese officials who visited Brussels notably Mr. Ali Karti Foreign Minister, Ahmed Ibrahim Tahir, Speaker of the Sudanese Parliament, Dr. Jalal Degair Minister of International Cooperation.
The European Union press office announced that the EU mission is expecting the arrival of the next European Union Ambassador to Khartoum in January 2012 to present his credentials to the Sudanese authorities. In August 2011, the High Commissioner of the European Union Catherine Ashton appointed Czech Ambassador Tomas Ulicny to be the next head of the European Union Delegation to Sudan. He recently posted as Czech Ambassador to Syria and was chosen based on his expertise in Arab Affairs and issues of democratization and human rights.
