Khartoum, Sudan (Sudanow)- Sudan on Friday beat Gabon 1-0 in the opening game of group one within the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2011) in Khartoum stadium, a much publicized clash attended by the head of the State President Omar Al Bashir, the Governor of Khartoum State, and the Minister of Youth and Sports.

The Sudanese side known as Sugur Al Gidian or (the Secretary birds) started the match showing much more determination to win the game than the Gabonese who were aware of the fact that the host team was there to win, receiving such a support, especially during the first half.

However they Gabonese came out in the second half to show they were not there for tourism, embarrassing the Sudanese national squad and leaving the Omdurman National Radio lead commentator, Mohamed Yusuf, shouting most of the last fifteen minutes about each attack that“ pray to God it will end peacefully” meaning denying the Gabonese a chance to score. But if the Gabonese have come out with such little scores entering their goal, was their goal keepers, with seven corners.

The Secretary Bird, usually a pensive solitary hunter, is powerful in dashing and in manoeuvrability at low altitude, feeds only on fresh meat, is Sudan’s national symbol.

The first goal was snatch by Mudathir Karika (named after the famous Brazilian striker Antonio Careca) 19 minutes from the kick off.

The Sudanese Football Union was sure to show then national traditional arts of the Sudan showing Sudan’s African heritage in a way that would stun most of the African players and observers who use to read and hear about Sudan’s Arab and Islamic orientation. But away from politics the Sudanese traditional dancers show what talents they have throwing beautiful performance and serving as impetus for the national team to reciprocate in goals. It did not save for one time.

Group one which started the competition today includes Sudan, Algeria, Gabon, and Uganda.

But as expected the first game ended with the Sudanese coming out winners, with such a “tremendously huge fan presence” as the Omdurman National Radio, commentator, Mohamed Yusuf, described it, helping them securing the win.

But perhaps what most African teams will come out with, is the fabulous reception they received in Medani the second town in Sudan where huge crowds of Sudanese hailing from west Africa poured into the street at the entrance of the town to welcome them, according to the national television.
