Khartoum, (Sudanow) - The United Nations Mission in the Sudan and the independent Carter Center, have separately described elections in south Kordufan that resulted the win of Ahmed Haroun, candidate for the ruling national congress party in Sudan, as peaceful and credible .
“The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) welcomes the completion of gubernatorial and legislative elections in Southern Kordufan State, which were conducted in a peaceful manner monitored by a large number of observers.” UNMIS said in a terse statement issued in Khartoum .
On its part the Carter Center has stressed that “South Kordufan’s elections were generally peaceful and credible. The voting, counting, and results aggregation processes were conducted in a nonpartisan and transparent manner under intense scrutiny from leading political parties.” A release by the centre said .
UNMIS said although it was not an official observer of the elections but had provided logistical and technical support .
“We urge all parties to continue to maintain peace following the announcement of the results today, and encourage any party that may have complaints regarding the election process to address them through legal means or dialogue.” UNMIS said in it statement .
But Carter center has pointed out in a much detailed statement it published on Wednesday that “despite a climate of heightened insecurity and instances of procedural irregularities that removed an important safeguard of the process, South Kordufan’s elections were generally peaceful and credible. The voting, counting, and results aggregation processes were conducted in a nonpartisan and transparent manner under intense scrutiny from leading political parties . “
The carter statement has stressed that the official results announced by the National Election Commission (NEC) and State High Election Commission (SHEC) indicate a closely contested race between the two dominant parties. Challenges and complaints about the process should be pursued through the formal legal channels prescribed by law, and the resolution of any disputes should ensure timely decisions based on a thorough and transparent review of evidence. The NEC should use the official database developed to compile the preliminary results .
