United Nations condemns attack on its troops in Abyei area

Khartoum, (Sudanow) - The United Nations on Friday condemned and described as a criminal act, the attacks carried out by the Sudan People’s liberation Army SPLA against its troops and the Sudanese forces in Abyei areas on Thursday.
On Friday the United Nations has condemned and described as a criminal act, the attack by the southern Sudan government against joint integrated troops that combines UN and Sudanese armed forces troops.
“The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) strongly condemns the attack against its convoy on 19 May in Abyei. The incident took place at around 18h30 in Dokura, an area controlled by the Southern Sudan Police Services (SSPS), approximately 10 kilometers north of Abyei town.” A statement by the United Nations Mission in the Sudan (UNMIS) said the world organization.
The statement said at the time of the attack, the convoy was transporting 200 troops of Joint Integrated Units of the Sudan Armed Forces to their designated post, as part of the deployment plan of the Kadugli Agreements, which had been agreed to by all parties.
“This act constitutes a serious breach of previous agreements made between the two parties. It is also a criminal attack against the UN. UNMIS calls on the parties to immediately investigate the incident and take appropriate action against the perpetrators of this deliberate attack.” The statement underlined.
It called on all concerned parties in the region to shoulder their responsibility to protect civilians in the area, saying UNMIS remains ready to continue to assist the parties in the implementation of the Kadugli Agreement and urge them to do everything possible to stay on course in the implementation of this agreement and avoid any actions that could derail it.
Earlier in the day the Sudanese army on its forces in Abyei area were attacked by the Sudan people’s liberation army SPLA sustaining what it terms as “huge losses” that are still being assessed. It said it reserve the right to respond at time and place it decides in response.
“our troops which were coming out of Abyei area according to an agreement concluded earlier, and in the presence of United nations Mission in Sudan UNMIS troops, were ambushed and the spla used heavy weaponry, resulting in huge losses that are currently being assessed, with numerous members of our armed forces still missing” the army said in a statement carried by the official Sudan news agency on Friday.
The statement signed by the army spokesman, Colonel Al Sawarmi Khalid, detailed a series of provocations by the spla for the federal troops around Abyei area and attacks one of which carried on the May the 12th resulting in the death of 14 army troops and the injury of 11 others, five army soldiers are still missing including two officers.
“The UNAMID representative intervened and called for self-control and promised to intervene and to handle the presence of spla troops that were brought into the area (in breach of previous agreements)” the army said.
It said the army unit noticed continued increase of spla troops in the area and has been subjected to numerous provocations, with the United Nations bearing witness to this.
It said the troops in the area fearing for the safety of the individuals decided to pull even further north, and this was being carried out under UNMIS supervision and participation what, seven kilometer outside the town, they came under heavy spla fire.
It said intensive weaponry fire was used leading to “huge” human losses which are still being counted.

The spla was at war with the central government since 1983. The war in the south, described as the longest war in Africa, was ended in 2005 when the government in Khartoum and rebel Sudan people liberation army/ movement reached a peace deal in Naivasha, Kenya. The deal which stipulated for a referendum in which southerners decided to separate from the rest of the country, has also stipulated that the future of Abyei area, currently part of northern Sudan, should, be decided in arrangement to be decided by the two sides, in separate arrangements.
