KHARTOUM, Sudan (Sudanow) - Two children were killed and eight other civilians wounded in an artillery shelling by the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army- North (SPLM/A-N) on Kadugli, capital of South Kordufan State, the Sudanese army said on Tuesday.
The official spokesman of the Armed Forces, Col. Sawarmy Khalid Saad, has pointed out in a statement posted at the official website of the Sudanese Ministry of Defense published by the Sudan News Agency (SUNA) on Tuesday, that “remnants of the People’s Movement (SPLM-N), in an attempt to disturb peace and stability”, targeted security posts outside Kadugli and shelled some residential quarters of the city from a distance of 12 km.
Colonel Saad said two children were killed and eight civilians were injured in the artillery shelling, adding that SAF stood up to this “indiscriminate act which targeted the civilians in an attempt by the People’s Movement to prove its existence and to raise the morale of its members.”
He stressed that the Sudanese army was "capable of putting an end to those lawless acts which will not impair the peace and security in the State," said the spokesman, adding that the SPLM-N combat ability is rated and can be dealt with.
The state of panic that seized the civilians has now vanished and calm has returned to normal, the spokesman stressed.
