Khartoum, 14 March 2012 (sudanow.info.sd) - The Government of Sudanand the United Nations on Tuesday concluded the second phase of the preparations of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for the period of 2013-2016.
Coordinated by the Ministry of International Cooperation and the UN Country Team, the two-day exercise helped bring together representatives from the UN and the relevant line Ministries to review the major national development challenges and identify key areas of interventions where the UN can support the achievement of national development priorities in Sudan.
Participants reviewed key milestones reached in the road map for the finalization of the UNDAF process, which started in September 2011 and identified potential funding sources and contributions from Government of Sudan, donors, UN, and others.
Four pillars for development interventions were recognized by both the Government and the UN. These pillars included Poverty Reduction, Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Livelihoods; Basic Services; Governance and Rule of Law; Social Cohesion, Peace Consolidation and Peace Dividends. Outcomes and areas of intervention were also agreed upon by all participants, for implementation during the period 2013-2016.
The Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Sudan, Mr. Ali Al-Za’tari, addressed the opening session in Arabic and stated "Sudan is now in its post-separation transition period. It is a unique time in Sudan’s history. Now is the right time for the United Nations and the Government to come together to agree on a common vision for the future. The outcomes we will agree upon are the heart of the UNDAF. In agreeing upon strategic outcomes, we are searching for the intersection of key national priorities and the comparative advantage of the UN," he added.
"We anticipate that Donors inside and outside Sudan will be looking to the new UNDAF outcomes as a roadmap for future cooperation, as well as for development and recovery programming," Mr. Al-Za’tariadded.
Minister of International Cooperation, Ms. Ishraga Sayed Mahmoud expressed the Government’s satisfaction with the ongoing preparations preceding the finalization of the UNDAF. “We are very pleased with the fact that the national development priorities of the five-year plan and the three-year Plan for Sustainability of Economic Stability are reflected in the UNDAF and participatory and inclusive approach of this process which ensures national ownership,” she added.
Thetwo-day workshop is one of the most important and critical events in the process leading up to the adoption and signing in May 2012 of a new UNDAF which represents a common strategic framework for the operational activities of the United Nations system at the country level and the foundation for a coherent program of cooperation with the Government of Sudan.
