Khartoum, (Sudanow) - The army said it has recaptured dozens of positions hitherto held by the rebel Revolutionary Front (SRF), seizing large quantities of ammunitions, weapons and equipment, a part of its dry season offensive announced earlier in the year by the Minister of Defense, Lt Gen Abdul Rahim Mohamed Hussein.
The official news agency and the Semi- official Sudan Media center on Saturday said the Sudanese army troops have seized strategic locations and key military base from the rebel Revolutionary Front (SRF) and 16 other positions from the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) in South Kordufan.
The army official spokesman, Colonel Sawarmy Khalid Saad said in a statement equally carried by the state-run Radio Omdurman, Saturday that his forces have liberated Abu Al-Hassan region, a key administrative and operations command base for SRF and 16 other positions used to be held by the SPLM-N in South Kordufan.
The statement said the government forces have seized huge quantities of military equipment, weapons and ammunitions, in the operation.
It said a number of SAF soldiers were killed or injured in the fighting which it said was part of a major offensive for freeing South Kordufan State from the rebels. SAF forces are still pursuing the fleeing rebels, it added.
