Khartoum International Airport operates under new ICAO standards

KHARTOUM, (SUDANOW)—Aviation industry experts consider acquiring by Khartoum international airport of the operational efficiency certificate of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as an important and historic accomplishment for the Sudanese Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). It is an achievement that reinforces the process of development of the country’s aviation industry in view of the remarkable increase in the aerial traffic in the airport during past years.


CAA Manager Mohamed Abdul Aziz said Khartoum international airport administration was awarded after several structural measures have been introduced in accordance with ICAO the requirements of ICAO which conducted a verification process on the CAA in 2006

Speaking a celebration organized by the airport administration on the occasion, Engineer Abdul Aziz said it took the administration more than one year of endeavor to be awarded the certificate. The challenge now is to keep- this reward by carrying on with the programmes for improvement and development of all sections of the airport.

The accomplishment is the beginning for rehabilitation of all seven Sudanese airports with this process to be finalized for three airports in different states of the country, he said.

The CAA Manager said the Khartoum international airport was built in 1047 and rehabilitated afterwards to cope with the air-traffic despite the surrounding area as it lies in the middle of residential quarters. Since then, the air-traffic steadily, with the airlines using the airport reaching 24 companies in number.

ICAO introduced new provisions to the 14th annex of the Chicago Civil Aviation Treaty as a framework for licensing airports in accordance with the standards and modes recommended in this connection as of 2004 for achieving high-level air safety measures at the airports.

The purpose of licensing airports is to verify their compliance with the international standards and the best international practices of the aviation industry, explained Khartoum Airport Manager Salah Al-Dinn Salam Muhanna. For his part, Engineer Khalid al-Nair, chairman of technical licensing committee, told SUDANOW that acquisition of the operational efficiency certificate reinforces mechanisms of boosting the air safety and developing the operation systems and places Khartoum airport among the international airports. He added that an ICAO team inspected airport, including the area of the airliners movements, the passages, the main runway and the isolated area in addition to the land vehicles operating on the airport, removal of broken planes, control measures of the wildlife environment around the airport, night operation in the airport and the lighting level in all facilities of the airport


The international airports licensing expert, Dr. Naji al-Bedry, said the licensing of Khartoum airport is a step towards licensing other Sudanese airports. Lauding the efforts by the airport personnel, Bedry remarked that the licensing of Khartoum airport was a result of observance of the policies and controls drawn by CAA in accordance with the standards endorsed by ICAO.

Ahmed al-Mujtaba, a passenger on Al-Ittihad airliner on his way to the UAE, commended the improvements made in Khartoum airport, the good environment and services to the passengers. He noted that acquisition of the operational efficiency certificate is not the challenge but the real challenge is to maintain this standard of efficiency

Marsland Airlines Station Manager at Khartoum airport, Asem Abdul Sadek Abbas, praised the recent development of Khartoum airport, especially after verification by ICAO team. He made reference to bringing in by the airport administration of a number of electronic equipment and devices to be used in weighing luggage and issuing boarding cards.

Abbas noted that the airlines companies are being faced with a number of problems including the narrow internal passenger halls and inadequate numbers of counters for departures and arrivals in addition to the narrow entrance of the main hall and limited number of the X-ray devices for testing the luggage. The Marsland Airlines official called for increasing the number of those devices to match the increasing number of passengers. He also called upon the airport administration to remove the monopoly by some air-cargo companies of land equipment inside the airport.

Meanwhile, Abdul Majid Mohamed Abdul Majid, chairman of the fruit and vegetable department of the Commercial Chambers Union, said the improvements made in Khartoum airport for which it has obtained the operational efficiency certificate by ICAO was positively reflected on the exporters. He commended the standard of services they are offered, calling upon the airport administration to encourage and back the exporters for supporting the national economy. However, he pointed out some problems facing the fruit and vegetable exporters, including the limited space of the export village causing accumulation of the export goods in addition to inadequate counters and tractors and land equipment. The exporter called upon the government for supporting and modernizing the fleet of SUDANAIR as it is the national carrier. He said some air-cargo companies exploit the exporters in view of the lack of genuine competition in this field.
