Japan Sudanese cooperation detailed in a press release: Press Release
24 March, 2013By: Mohammed Osman
Khartoum, (Sudanow)- The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on Sunday issued a statement on Japan’s partnership with the Sudan, in the fields of drinking water, agriculture and training. The release detailed the domains of cooperation in the various fields. Following is the text of the press release:
Partnership between Sudan and Japan in the area of human resources development for water sector continues to grow as more training materials donated by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) arrived in Northern State Water Corporation (SWC) today. On March 24th, Sudan and Japan celebrated continued cooperation at “the Opening Ceremony of Training Center and the Handover Ceremony of Equipment” held at Northern SWC in Dongola. Minister Ali Hassan of Physical Planning and Public Utilities, H.E. Amb. Ryoichi Horie, Ambassador of Japan, and Mr. Hiroyuki Mori, Chief Representative of JICA, attended the Ceremony and affirmed their commitment for working ever more closely to ensure clean water supply for all Sudanese people.
Since 2008, JICA has implemented “the Human Resources Development Project for Water Supply”. Around 55 trainees from Northern SWC have participated in the comprehensive training in the Drinking Water and Sanitation Unit Training Center in cooperation with JICA. In 2012 and 2013, JICA provided the training equipment, such as computer, printer, projector and electric and mechanical tools, which amounted to 80,000USD. With improved training at SWC, together with better monitoring and project implementation, Northern SWC will be able to strengthen capacity of engineers and operators at state and locality-levels.
JICA’s partnership with Northern State in water sector dates back to 80’s. In 1986, JICA supplied millions of dollars worth of equipment including drilling machine and crane with truck through the Grant Aid Project by the Government of Japan. Thanks to continued care and maintenance by the people of Northern State, those equipment and constructed water supply facilities are still operating today.
It is not just in the area of water supply that Northern State is partnering with JICA. In the agriculture sector, Northern State joined the effort to promote upland rice cultivation from 2012 as a new summer crop to improve food security and farmers' livelihood in cooperation with JICA in the "Capacity Development Project for the Implementation of the Executive Programme for Agricultural Revival." The first season started as a small scale demonstration, with one demonstration farm of two feddans and another experimental site of Agriculture Research Corporation, focusing on establishing effective and appropriate cultivation techniques in the local environment. While birds caused a serious damage in the first season, the State Ministry of Agriculture is determined to continue the trial in 2013 along with National Rice Project and States of Gezira, Sinnar, White Nile, Gadarif and River Nile.
Also in health sector, through “Frontline Maternal and Child Health Empowerment Project (Mother Nile Project)”, Phase 2”, in Northern State, 21 Health Visitors (HV) and Assistant Health Visitors (AHV) received Training of Trainers (ToT) for Village Midwife In-service Training, and 31 HV and AHV did the Training of Standard Obstetric Care for proper supervision for Village Midwives. Also Northern State Ministry of Health received training materials, such as midwifery care model mannequins and Village Midwives Kit, to ensure safe and quality maternal and child care in Northern State.
For more advanced training offered by JICA, six people from various public institutions in Northern State have studied in Japan in Egypt in the areas of irrigation, water resources, agriculture, health and policing between 2006 and 2012. In 2013, a tuberculosis coordinator in State Ministry of Health and a mechanic engineer in Northern State Water Corporation are invited for training in Japan and Morocco respectively.
