President Bashir calls for national dialogue
28 January, 2014By: Mohammed Osman
Khartoum, (Sudanow) - Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir on Monday called upon all political parties for dialogue on a document he called the “Comprehensive Reform Document” his National Congress Party (NCP) has formulated for rallying the people into wide-scale discussions on a number of issues.
Bashir, who is Chairman of the ruling NCP, said this in a speech which was widely publicized on the media during the past days before delivering it at the Friendship Hall Monday night and carried live on the state-run media, including Omdurman Radio and television.
Hundreds of politicians, prominently including such opposition leaders as Popular Congress Party (PCP) leader Hassan Turabi, recently established “Reform Now” movement Ghazi Salah Al-Dinn Atabani who defected from the NCP and National Umma Party leader Sadek al-Mahdi, were present in the front rows listening attentively to the long-awaited speech.
Although it was expected to be carrying a gesture for reconciliation with the opposition parties and the rebel movements, Bashir dwelt largely on the party which has been devoted to the national issues and advised other parties to follow its example.
He pinpointed to a number of issues, including peace which he said should prevail in the Blue Nile, South Kordofan and Darfur regions, and be given priority, stressin that peace is a pre-requisite to all other national tasks.
National Unity and economic development for eradicating poverty should also be subjected to discussion by all parties and even the rebel movements, provided that they lay down arms, said Bashir.
