Heavy Rains Kill 39, Demolish Thousands of Houses
06 August, 2014Khartoum (Sudanow)-Heavy rains and floods have killed 39 persons, demolished thousands of houses nationwide and left 184 people injured during the last week, an official report said Tuesday.
The Higher Council for Civil Defence told an extraordinary meeting of the cabinet that most states of the country have been affected by the unexpected high rates of rainfall, well beyond the average annual rate. Khartoum State is the most affected area where 17 persons were killed and 3077 houses destroyed, the Council explained.
The State was criticized for its poor preparation for the disaster and the opposition “Reform Now” party called for the resignation of the governor Dr. Abd al-Rahman al-Khidir.
The pools of water surrounded many areas rendering them inaccessible and causing power outages and transportation problems. Khartoum has declared full state of alert and schools reopening was postponed for a week.
The State was the most affected by the last year torrential rain and flooding where the United Nations estimated that more than 180,000 people were affected.
The Higher Council for Civil Defence said the heavy rains and floods have resulted in the collapse of 1308, 409, 300 and 388 houses in River Nile, Kassala, North Kordofan and White Nile States respectively.
