Sudan-Egypt First Land-Crossing Opened

Dongola (SUDANOW)—Roads and Bridges Minister and Presidential Representative Abdul Wahid Yusuf inaugurated today (Wednesday) the test operation of Ishkait crossing linking the Sudan with Egypt.
Present at the inaugural ceremony were Northern State Governor Dr. Ibrahim al-Khidir, his government members and an Egyptian delegation headed by Roads and Bridges Minister Hany Dhahy, representing the Egyptian side, and a large number of persons from the central government and the State and from Egypt.
Speaking at the ceremony, Abdul Wahid Yusuf extolled the accomplishment, remarking that the crossing would contribute to a tremendous shift in the process of trade and investment between the two countries and Africa at large and would open up new vistas in the distinguished relations between the Sudan and Egypt. He said the coming period would witness completion of all aspects of the formal celebration of the land-road and crossing.
The Governor of the Northern State, Dr. Ibrahim al-Khidir, expressed happiness of the people of the State for the test operation of the stretch. He enumerated the economic, social and political benefits of the project indicating that it would contribute to movement of Sudanese exports across Egypt to European markets and help promote the Egyptian exports to the African markets which are neighboring on the Sudan, particularly eastern, western and central Africa.
For his part, the Egyptian Roads and Bridges Minister lauded the eternal ties between the peoples of the two countries, predicting that the road would contribute to consolidating the relations and to exchange of the common benefits and interests
Egyptian Ambassador to Khartoum Osama Shaltout said in press statements that the cross-border land-road. He said it would add a new free market that would enhance the traffic of exports and imports of commodities and animal wealth in addition to activation of the movement of passengers and goods between the two halves of the Nile Valley and strengthening contacts between the two peoples.
The Minister announced completion of all procedures on the land stretch which include all services of passports, immigration, customs, specifications and measurements.
