President Bashir Concludes his 5-day Visit to UAE
25 February, 2015By: Aisha Braima
Khartoum, (Sudanow) - President Omar Bashir returned to Khartoum Wednesday evening concluding a several-day state visit to the United Arab Emirates during which he held talks with UAE officials on bilateral relations.
Ali Karti, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, pointed out in press statement upon the return of the President and the accompanying delegation that the visit followed a period of lukewarm in the relations between the two sides because of differences over political stands.
Although the minister did not explain these differences, still it was believed that relations between Sudan and Iran were not well-received by some Gulf States. Khartoum’s closure of the Iranian cultural center and expelling of cultural attaché last September on charges of spreading Shiite Sect as well as Bashir’s visit to the Kingdom the following month helped bring in some détente in these relations.
Karti said talks preceding the UAE visit and discussions held during the visit have led to rapprochement in the view points of the two countries leadership on a number of regional and security issues resulting in the common understanding reached during the current visit.
He said the visit has also economic aspects that were to be seen in the officials' hailing from the economic sectors that accompanied the President during the visit. Among the economic "achievements" of the visit was a 90 million US$ loan agreements to finance Setet Dam in east Sudan and a pledge to fund digging Kenana Canal in the south eastern part of the country , as well as an agreement to open the UAE'S labour market before the Sudanese manpower. The talks reviewed a wide range of topics of economic interests, investment laws and opportunities that are available in Sudan for the UAE investors at both public and private sectors.
The Minister said the president also met with the Sudanese in the Gulf region where an interaction between the president and the Sudanese expatriates took place and in which the president delivered clear answers on a number of questions of concern to the Sudanese working abroad as well as on the political and economic situation in the country.
