Diplomatic Representatives and Communities Organize Parade of Friendship Among Peoples
05 April, 2015By: Aisha Braima
Khartoum (Sudanow)-Dozens of ambassadors, diplomatic representatives, and hundreds of members of diplomatic communities in Sudan on Saturday walked from the confluence of the two Niles to the Friendship Hall in down town Khartoum in what is known as “the parade of friendship and brotherhood among the peoples.”
The parade, spearheaded by the ambassador of Morocco to the Sudan, Mohamed Maa'ul Ainain, who is the dean of the diplomatic corps in Khartoum, was initiated by the Venezuelan ambassador to the Sudan, Anibal Marquez. It was the first of its kind in Africa, according to organizers; previous events of similar nature were organized first in Canada, by Latin American countries in 2011 for solidarity with Montreal, Canada.
According to the Venezuelan ambassador to the Sudan in an interview with Sudanow magazine, the idea of the festival is based on expression of feelings of appreciation to the Sudanese people and” to extend to them gratefulness by all foreign communities represented by the accredited diplomatic missions for the hospitality and generosity and fine residence we have found in the Sudan.”
The march organized in Khartoum under the motto of “As the two Nile embrace so the people of the world in the Sudan” was initiated in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Sudanese National Council for Friendship with the People of the World.
National flags from various African, Latin American, European and Asian countries were carried by each of the subjects of their relevant country, singing national songs and parading, some dressed in their national costumes and others in casual sport fits.
Sudan’s Presidential Assistant, Abdul Rahaman al-Sadiq al-Mahdi, said the event showed the importance of popular diplomacy and the need to involve people in the diplomacy and to take any opportunity to bring peoples closer.
The event was topped by a festival of traditional dances and songs from various African and Latin American countries as well as Sudanese traditional dances in Khartoum, giving a colorful evening to goers alongside the Nile River, in an otherwise calm and dormant city at this time of the day.
