KHARTOUM (SUDANOW) - The African Union Mission observing the elections in the Sudan said it has noted with
satisfaction that the first two days of voting went on in a generally peaceful climate. No major incidents that could have a significant impact on the vote were registered.
In a statement it issued here on Wednesday the mission reported that the Sudanese voters went into polling stations across the country for the third day of voting to elect their president and lawmakers for a
five-year tenure.
It noted that the voting started early on Monday 13 April in 7133 polling stations, 468 state geographic constituencies and 213 national geographic constituencies all over the country, where over 13 million
voters are expected to cast their ballots in the three-day polls.
The statement pinpointed that led by H.E. Chief Olusengun Obasanjo; former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) is on the ground since 10th April 2015. The AUEOM deployed in teams of two to cover 7 states in Sudan.
The statement said the AU Observers are visiting polling stations and monitoring the process, which start on 13 April. "The Mission noted with satisfaction that the first two days of voting went on in a generally peaceful climate. No major incidents that could have a significant impact on the vote were registered." The release
stressed.
The AU mission statement said apart from the presidential election where sixteen candidates are competing, voters also will elect 425 members of the National Assembly and 2,235 members of State Assemblies. A total of 1,072 candidates will compete for seats in the National Assembly, while over 7,000 will run for state legislative
assembly seats.
Deployed following the receipt of an invitation from the Sudanese government, AUEOM is compose of 20 short-term observers (STOs) drawn from 14 African countries, representing institutions such as the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), Election Management Bodies (EMBs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
The AUEOM's mandate is to ensure that the elections take place in a peaceful context as well as observe that the election is free, fair and transparent. Its mandate is derived from the 2007 African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance; the 2002 AU/OAU Declaration on Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa; and the 2002 AU
Guidelines for Elections Observation and Monitoring Missions.
The Mission will issue a statement of its preliminary assessment of the elections on 16 April at a Press Conference at Corinthia Hotel in Khartoum. A final and comprehensive report will be released within two months from the date of announcement of final election results.
