President Bashir Receives Mbeki, Renews Sudan Commitment for Peace and Stability in South Sudan
03 August, 2015By: Aisha Braima
KHARTOUM (SUDANOW)- The Assistant of the President of the Republic, Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamid, has reaffirmed Sudan’s keenness and its endeavors to achieve peace, stability and security in South Sudan.
The Assistant, who is also the Deputy Chairman of the National Congress Party, has pointed out in press statements following a meeting between President of the Republic Omar Bashir and the visiting head of the African Union High Level Implementation Panel, Thabo Mbeki, that the Sudan would spare no efforts until the situation is stable in South Sudan as the situation there reflects on the Sudan.
He said president Bashir has affirmed Sudan commitment to implement the agreements signed with the state of South Sudan. He said the Panel will invite the Joint Security Committee between the Sudan and south Sudan, to hold an extraordinary meeting to discuss and set the zero line between the two countries and to set the security arrangement that will lead to the demilitarized zone between the two sides.
He recalled that the Sudan had earlier agreed to the zero line in accordance with the map presented by the African Union and that Sudan accepted the map after the relevant changes related to the disputed areas were introduced. However, he said, it was South Sudan that initially accepted the map, then came to reject it a matter that frustrated the negotiation process on the zero line and the demilitarized zone.
He said President Bashir’s meeting with the African Union High level Implementation Panel delegation reviewed the issue of National Dialogue, the peace realization in south Sudan and that it reaffirmed that dialogue was the only way out for all issues relevant to the country. He said Sudan has stressed that this dialogue remains a national question and that it would be inclusive with all Sudanese in and outside the country taking part in it. He said dialogue in the two tracks was progressing well.
He said the president also briefed the visiting delegation on the dialogue and the meeting the president will be holding with the 7+7 mechanism and the head of the political parties on Wednesday, where 50 national personalities will be selected, in addition to the 5 facilitators and that the matter will be submitted to the national assembly of the National Dialogue that groups all political parties for the resumption of the dialogue and for setting the date for launching the process.
He said it was also agreed with Mbeki that whoever wanted to join the process could do so as the door remains open for them to join the process.
He said the gathering will review the issues related to the peace, security, freedoms, governance and rule, identity and economy.
He said the meeting also discussed the issues related to the two areas and that there should be an agreement to end the war and that the matter should not be a cessation of hostilities as was the situation in the past and that the stake holders will come and be part of the national dialogue on the basis that the national issues need participation of all the nationals of the country.
Meanwhile, Mbeki pointed out that he has received assurance from the National Congress that it remains committed to the national dialogue and that the President Omar Bashir will be meeting in two days with the 7+7 mechanism and after the congress decides the launching of the national dialogue process.
He said he also received assurance from the government that the door will remain open even if people are not coming to the dialogue right away.
