US to Exempt Environment Projects from Sanctions

By: Aisha Braima

KHARTOUM (SUDANOW) - The United States of America has promised to exempt funding of environment projects in Sudan from the economic sanctions imposed by the US on Sudan since the 1990s.

The Chairman of the High Council for Environment in Khartoum State, Major General Omar Nimir, said in a statement to the semi-government Ashorooq Television that the exemption promise was made by the US charge d’affaires in a meeting here on Wednesday.

He said the meeting, which was also attended by Federal Environment Minister Dr. Hassan Abdul Gadir Hilal, discussed resolutions and recommendations by an international environment conference recently organized by Khartoum State in which more than 40 countries and more than 130 international organizations and UN agencies took part.

Nimir expects a huge influx of funds would be received from donors and countries, including China, France and Canada, to finance a number of environment projects, including a greenbelt around the three capital cities of Khartoum, Omdurman and Khartoum North and a garbage recycling plant for generation of electricity.
