KHARTOUM (SUDANOW) - Somali president Hassan Shiekh Muhmoud arrived in Khartoum on Wednesday leading a high-level delegation for a two-day official visit to Sudan during which he will hold talks with his Sudanese counterpart Omer al-Bashir and government officials.

He was received at Khartoum Airport by President al-Bashir and a number of ministers and senior officials.

Joint talks between the two sides started at the Republican Palace to discuss issues of common interests.

According to a joint closing communique, the two sides held a plenary round of talks in which a high-level delegation accompanying President Muhmoud, including his foreign and interior ministers and security chief and senior Sudanese officials took part, followed by a closed-door round of talks between the two presidents.

The talks centered on ways and means of the bilateral relations of cooperation and support to each other in the regional and international fora.

It added that the two sides stressed the importance of exerting efforts for confronting the challenges facing the Islamic countries as well as the threats of extremism and terrorism in the region.

The Somali side backed the Sudan position towards the International Criminal Court (ICC) and a proposed suggestion of taking a stern attitude against the ICC in its stance against African leaders.

The two sides pledged cooperation in combating illegal migration, human trafficking and organized crime with the Somali side commending the Sudanese regional and international cooperation on this issue.

The Somali side also commended the efforts by the Sudanese government for achieving peace in Darfur as well as the administrative referendum there and supported the Sudanese call for lifting the economic sanctions being imposed on it since the 1990s.

It also pledged support to the Sudanese demand for the UNAMID exit from Darfur, the communique said. It added that the Sudanese side briefed the Somalis on the political situation with emphasis on the national dialogue and the road-map worked out by the African Union for ending hostilities and urging the opposition to join the national dialogue process.
