Sudan Calls for Direct Negotiations with Egypt over Halayeb and Shalateen, or Resorting to International Arbitration
18 April, 2016By: Aisha Braima
KHARTOUM (SUDANOW) - Sudan on Sunday called for direct negotiations with Egypt over Halayeb and Shalateen, similar to the process Cairo followed with Saudi Arabia recently over Tirana and Sanafir isles or, otherwise, resorting to international arbitration in compliance with international laws and charters applicable in such cases, just as Egypt did for restoring its sovereignty over Taba area.
In a statement it issued here, carried by the official news agency SUNA, over the agreement on the return of Tirana and Sanafir to the sovereignty of Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that Sudan would continue following up this agreement and other agreements attached to it, with the concerned bodies. The Ministry stressed the necessary measures and procedures would be taken to protect Sudan's well entrenched sovereignty rights over Halabyeb and Shalateen areas.
The statement stressed that the said agreement was of concern to the Sudan because it is related to the Sudanese areas of Halabyeb and Shalateen and the adjacent shores.
The statement underlined the Ministry's full concern to closely follow this agreement the details of which were not yet made public, in observation of the full and immaculate rights of the Sudan and to make sure that the said agreement does not touch in any way the legal, sovereign and historic rights of the Sudan over the areas of Halayeb and Shalateen and the adjacent shores.
The statement pinpointed that since 1958 Sudan has tabled a complaint before the United Nations Security Council in which it reaffirmed its sovereign rights over Halayeb and Shalateen and that Sudan continues to renew this complaint regularly and each time reaffirming its sovereignty rights over the two areas.
The statement said Sudan calls on sister people of Egypt to sit down for direct negotiation seeking a solution to this issue, similar to the steps Egypt took with the brothers in Saudi Arabia or resort to international arbitration in compliance with international laws and charters resorted to in these cases as was the situation in returning the area of Taba to the Egyptian sovereignty.
The statement said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would continue to follow this agreement and other agreements annexed to it with the concerned bodies so that the necessary measures and arrangements safeguarding Sudan's well established sovereignty rights over Halayeb and Shalateen areas, are taken.
