States Option in Darfur Referendum Wins by 97.72%

KHARTOUM (SUDANOW) - The states option in Darfur Administrative Referendum has won by 97.72% with 2.28% voting for one region option.
Chairman of Darfur Referendum Commission, Omer Ali Gamma, said in a press conference Saturday that the total votes in the referendum is 3,153,896, out of which 3,810,976 supported the state option while 71,920 preferred the one region option.
He said 102 foreigners and 1500 nationals have monitored the voting process including representatives of the Arab League, the African Union, Russia, China, Turkey African and Arab countries.
The referendum has been conducted during 11-13 April in implementation of a provision in the July 2011 Doha Document on Peace in Darfur (DDPD) which provides that a plebiscite must be held in five years following the signing of the document in the Qatari capital by the Sudanese government and the former rebel Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM).
