06 June, 2016By: Aisha Braima
KHARTOUM (Sudanow.info.sd) - The entire world is mourning the late Mohammad Ali, the international boxing champion and brave Moslem.
But a village in the Gezira State was particularly appalled by the death of this great celebrity.
Soon after hearing the news about Ali’s death, the inhabitants of Sa’ada al-Agaliyyeen village started to pray for him and gathered to offer salat al-ghae’b (prayer in absentia) for his soul.
The villagers had developed a love for the man after he visited their village in 1988 when he visited Sudan upon an invitation from General Swar Addahab, chairman of the Islamic Da’awa (Call) Organization.
Ali (74) died in hospital Thursday from respiratory complications. He had already suffered for long from the Parkinson disease that drove him into isolation.
Ali started his successful career as a boxer by defeating Sony Liston in 1964 to win his first world title. Then he retained the heavy weight championship for three times.
In addition to his high boxing skills, Ali had developed a fame as a defender of human rights and a peace activist, especially when he disobeyed a U.S army order to go and fight in Vietnam. Ali had a passion for poetry and was known as a tactful speaker who is always ready with witty answers.
Sa’dat al-Agaliyyeen villagers remember to have gathered to greet Ali upon his arrival to their village on 18 November 1988. All the village farmers, workers, school children and women stood to welcome Ali when he arrived.
The guest then listened to patriotic songs from the school children as well as poems praising The Prophet Mohammad. He then shock hands with the elders and youth leaders before standing for a photo session with the villagers. Ali then joined the villagers in a local meal and visited the primary school.
As a result of this emotional visit the villagers got very interested in Ali’s news, his defense of human rights and Islam and his care for the poor. Equally, they were upset by the news about his ailment.
Upon hearing the news about Ali’s death the villagers groupings remembered his visit to their area and prayed for him.
The village WhatsApp groups called for salat al-ghae’b prayer to be held for him wherever possible. They also urged their fellow villagers living in the U.S.A to offer condolences on the village behalf.
