European Union And United States Call For Resumption Of Negotiations Over GERD
24 October, 2020
KHARTOUM (Sudanow) _ The European Union and the United States have called on Egypt, Ethiopia and the Sudan to resume the negotiations over the Greater Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and to see to the success of the negotiations.
President Donald Trump accused Ethiopia of backing off from an agreement he brokered at the White House between the three countries over GERD. He said either Ethiopia return to the negotiating table in good faith or that his country would not de-freeze assistance to Ethiopia. President
Trump Administration stopped its assistance to Ethiopia after it failed to make concessions for reaching a deal with Egypt and the Sudan. Trump said Egypt might be forced to “blow up” the dam.
The EU on Saturday said over 250 million citizens of the Blue Nile Basin stand to benefit from a predictable agreement based on a negotiated arrangement for the filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and are expecting investments in water security, irrigation, agricultural production and electricity generation.
The EU High Representative Josep Borrell, said on Saturday that an agreement on the filling of the GERD was within the reach of Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt.
“Now is the time for action and not for increasing tensions. The efforts of South Africa, current Chair of the African Union, to bring the parties to a negotiated solution have the full support of the European Union which looks forward to the imminent resumption and successful conclusion of the talks,” the EU official stressed.
President Trump on Friday expressed his anger at Ethiopia over its construction of a huge dam on the Nile River and appeared to suggest that Egypt may destroy it.
Trump made the remarks as he announced a breakthrough normalization deal between US ally Israel and Sudan, which like Egypt, fears that Ethiopia will use up scarce water resources.
"It's a very dangerous situation because Egypt is not going to be able to live that way," Trump said at his Oval Office with leaders of Sudan and Israel on speakerphone.
He said the frustrated Egyptians "they'll end up blowing up the dam. And I said it and I say it loud and clear - they'll blow up that dam. And they have to do."

Stories from the heart of the battlefield: Mothers of Disabling Children .. an Endless Suffering
Khartoum, (Sudanow) — Wide-eyed, she watched children racing across the schoolyard, their laughter ringing like birdsong in the vast expanse. The sounds blended in her mind, playground shouts, lessons recited, like a melody without end. Yet for Nidal, it was only a distant tune, one she could never join. She sat quietly in the courtyard, a small book in her hands whose letters she could not decipher, her heart carrying a s...
