Four Killed, Hundreds Injured In Sudanese Security Crackdown On Protests

KHARTOUM (Sudanow) - The Central Committee of the Sudanese Doctors has revealed that at least four protesters were killed in Omdurman during December 30 nation wide demonstrations against the October 25 military coup.
An official statement by the Sudanese Police on Friday confirmed the toll. It said 279 protesters and 49 police men were injured.
The protest was one in a series of mass demostrations called for by the Resistance committees, Sudanese Professionals Association, political parties and other groups against the military coup led by lt. General Al Burhan, to press for a return to civilian led transitional government.
Thursday deaths raised the toll of the civilians killed since the coup to 52.
The Khartoum State's Ministry of Health said security forces have prevented the ambulances transporting wounded civilians to hospitals.
The Central Committee of the Sudanese Doctors reported that security forces have arrested a wounded man and the group taking him to an ambulance.
The Forces of Freedom and Change accused security forces of using excessive force against the peaceful protestors on Thursday and called on international community and Human Rights organizations to denounce the measures taken by general Burhan since October 25th.
The U. S Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he was deeply troubled by reports of lethal force being used against peacefully protesters in Sudan as thousands of people marched against military rule.
He stressed, in a tweet, that U.S. stands with the people of Sudan, as they demand freedom, peace, and justice.
The U.N. Special Representative to Sudan, Volker Perthes, said that he was "deeply disturbed" by the deaths, adding that "all people have the right to express themselves peacefully; media have to report freely."
The UN Human Rights Commission said "we remain deeply concerned about Sudan where people were reportedly killed & injured during peaceful demonstrations yesterday, a hospital and a media office attacked and Human Rights activists arrested. We urge authorities to refrain from unnecessary and disproportionate use of force."
