Celebration Of Prophet Mohamed Birthday

KHARTOUM (Sudanow) - One of the deep rooted traditions in Sudan, particularly in Omdurman, known as the traditional capital of the country, is to start celebrations of the Prophet’s Birthday with a lots of fanfare, colorful, and joyous parade locally known as “Zafat al-Moulid”.

The Zafa – a popular processions that brings together people from all walks of life away from official tantrums and governmental grip- is usually organized on the first day of the Islamic month of Rabi al-Awwal, which coincided with Sunday November 19.

The kickoff leads the way for various forms of festivities that continue up to the Prophet birthday. The Prophet was born on the 12th of Rabi al-Awwal, which this year coincides with November 30.

Sufi sects participated in the Zafa wafting their mainly green flags, reciting litanies and poems in praise of the messenger of Allah, to the rhythm and cadence of tambourines, masterminded and led by a huge drum.

Senior officials do not lead but join the Zafa which gets larger as it proceeds through the allies and roads leading to the main square, the venue of the main event where men, women, youth and senior citizens and children continue join the event, creating a unique and rich scene that deserves an artistic eye to relish.
