Important Street Renamed After Martyr Matar

KHARTOUM (Sudanow) - In a solemn ceremony on site, Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has renamed one of Khartoum’s longest streets after martyr Mohammad Hashim Matar who was shot dead during the security’s crackdown on the sit-in around the army general command on June the 3rd.
Formerly named “the Ingaz (Salvation) Street”, the facility links outlying parts of Northern Khartoum with the City’s center across the River Blue Nile.
The street was built during the democratic rule of 1986-89, and was about to be opened for traffic when ousted army general Omar Albashir seized power in a military coup on 30 June, 1989.
And immediately when the new rulers wanted to present an achievement to the public, they hurriedly held a ceremony and named the street “The Ingaz Street”, after their so-called “the Ingaz (Salvation) Revolution.”
Martyr Matar was an M sc student of civil engineering in the British University of Brunel in London.
During his university vacation here in Khartoum, he joined the sit-in that began on 6 April.
When Matar martyred his name resonated around the World by the hashtag: ‘#Blue For Sudan’ in which thousands of the social media (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram) users turned their profile photos blue (Martyr Matar’s favorite) in solidarity with the Sudanese protesters.
The courage demonstrated by the martyrs in the defense of the democratic cause had inspired and encouraged the protesters to continue with the revolution, to commemorate the martyrs and to press for justice to be done for them.
Wrote Prime Minister Hamdok on Twitter:
“Today we commemorate Martyr Matar by the opening of this street and we will do this for the rest of the martyrs by naming roads, schools and hospitals after them. We will do that in order to always immortalize them as they are always alive with us, reminding us of our duty of guarding this great revolution.”
PM Hamdok added:
“It is the sacrifices of our martyrs that inflamed the revolution and was the cause behind its continuation. The martyrs have taught us the real meaning of courage in the face of tyranny. We are full of humility and respect for those who offered their souls for this nation and laid with their great sacrifices the foundations for change in Sudan.”
