Sudanese Journalists Take an Initiative to Stop Tribal Conflict in Darfur
16 May, 2015KHARTOUM (SUDANOW)- Almost all Sudanese political daily newspapers on Saturday run the same headline and editorial “No for Blood Shedding” on rejection of recent escalation of tribal conflict in East Darfur state, calling for action to stop killing among members of the two tribal groups, the Maalia and the Rizaigat.
The move came within the framework of an initiative led by the editors of the daily newspapers who gathered Friday evening and decided to lead a campaign against what they considered atrocities that run counter to the reconciliatory Sudanese personality indicating that politicians have a hand in that bloody clash. The journalists decided that on Saturday they should run one unified headline and/ or editorial: no for blood shedding.
They called on journalists to shoulder their responsibility, inspired by the history of the Sudanese press in standing with the people aspirations and woes for now over 111 years, in exerting efforts to stop the senseless waste of souls in Darfur.
Unlike the traditional picture drawn in the international and regional media about Arabs versus Africans conflict in Darfur; this one is between two major Arab tribes in the restive region of Darfur. Although up to now no official figure about causalities has been release, conflicting reports speak of “hundreds killed and injured” and “thousands” civilians forced to leave their homes in the region.
The developments spurred the Sudanese presidency to form a high level committee, headed by the Minister of Interior General Ismat Abdul Rahman to probe the incidents and sent troops to work as buffer zone between the two, some 700 km west of the national capital Khartoum.
The editors decided to send a delegation within the coming few days to Darfur to launch the initiative practically.
