Sudan government critical of US Human Rights report
07 March, 2014KHARTOUM, Sudan (Sudanow)- Sudan on Friday accused the United States of American of applying double standards when dealing with Human Rights issues, turning a blind eye to progress made in the country and overlooking Washington’s own miserable standards in Iraq, Afghanistan, Guantanamo and other areas of the world.
In a statement is issued in Khartoum, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs,bitterly criticizing as “biased and prejudiced” an annual report issued on February 27 by the United States Department of State on human rights in the world, including Sudan.
The Sudanese official media, including SUNA news agency and Radio Omdurman, on Friday, said the Sudan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stressed that the United States of America lacks the moral authority to speak about human rights abuses given its record in Afghanistan, Iraq, Guantanamo and other areas of the world where millions were killed or held in detention without due process of law.
“The report relies on anonymous sources and twists facts to match with a standing position against the Sudan that has not changed for more than 20 years,” the Sudanese Foreign Ministry charged.
It reviewed at length the US report on elections, human rights abuses, practices by the security authorities and gender-based discrimination, branding as untrue, false and unfounded all charges against the Sudan on those issues.
The Sudanese Foreign Ministry, for instance, refuted a long-standing charge by the US that the Sudanese 2010 election was rigged, accusing the US of applying double standards, arguing that it was the same election that brought the present government to power in South Sudan, but was not criticized there.
It said the report has failed for the third time to knowledge that it was Khartoum that organized the referendum that culminated in the independence of South Sudan and that it was the same bodies, that had organized the referendum, which have also supervised the elections that brought President Bashir to the presidency.
It pointed out the US unilateral sanctions have caused death and misery for Sudanese civilians because of denial to have access to drugs manufactured in the United States and banning importation of spare parts for trains and airplanes.
“The United States cannot talks about human rights abuses while it is practicing the same…unilateral sanctions are a form of unjustified and unfounded collective punishment (on Sudanese civilians)... But it is the double standard policy that costs the United States loosing a friend each day and the respect that it used to enjoy” the Foreign Ministry charged.
